“Um what exactly is your service?” I asked her my eyebrows crinkling as I cocked my ears.
“I offer business coaching for momprenuers.”
“Okay, what exactly does that mean?” I asked.
”What struggles do you have in your business?” The happy voice asked.
I felt confused, I never mentioned having struggles in my business. I had only met this woman once so even if I had struggles I wanted to prioritize fixing, I sure as heck did not trust this woman enough to talk about it.
I gave her a fluff answer, now hoping the phone call would end. But I was also curious. She had a fancy website, a table at the conference, and seemed legit. She mentioned that she could fix any problem in my business. I asked her once more what exactly she meant by a business coach and was met with a wishy washy answer.
“How much do you charge for… this?” I asked, still having no idea what her offered service was.
“$5,000-10,000. Would you like to sign up?”
😳😳😳
No. Absolutely not.
This conversation floored me. As someone who has a background in sales I could not understand it. Why in the world would someone call to offer a $5-10k program, yet not even be able to give a description of what that program or coaching service would offer?
This was a call I received during one of my first years of running a hobby business. At that point I’ve been a business owner to multiple successful companies since and I can tell you one thing about that phone call. That she’s like hundreds if not thousands of other entrepreneurs.
She knew she had something to offer and was waiting for me to tell her what that was. Many entrepreneurs are creatives and hard workers. Those two adjectives together make one thing clear. Usually that one thing is that they can get it done! What ever it is. They have the ‘how hard could it be’ gene. And if we don’t hone in on our true talents, we try to do it all.
Now I’m not one of those coaches who believes in niches. You are a multifaceted human which means it’s okay to be multi passionate! You just have to do it right.
Stop bouncing around like a ping pong ball shouting, “Take me! I can do it!”
You HAVE to have an offer. Selling nothing can get sticky pretty fast and can lead to grand disappointment for everyone involved if you say yes to the wrong project.
Business takes planning. It takes sitting down to do the boring paperwork part that too many entrepreneurs avoid. And I get it, I’m a creative too! We want freedom, you avoided working in a corporate setting because you don’t want to be chained to a desk.
Planning you business isn’t that. Planning you business is looking at the map before you set out on the race. It’s taking the time to stretch so you don’t pull a muscle. It’s going to the store to grab water and a snack so you don’t pass out from exhaustion. It’s what it takes to reach the finish line of profit, of generational wealth, and of true freedom.
